Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a broad term used to refer to various healing arts that originate in China and are practised throughout the Asian sub-continent, and increasingly outside of Asia in western industrialised countries.

Like modern western medicine TCM is ´compartmentalised´. The major areas of therapy include Acupuncture / moxibustion, Massage (in Mandarin Tui Na, pronounced ´tooi-na´), herbal or ´internal´ medicine, , and Qi Gong (´chee goong´ – breathing and / or physical exercise).

Traditional Chinese Medicine uses a different system of diagnosis to that of western medicine.

All relevant information, including the symptom as well as the patient´s other general characteristics are gathered and woven together until it forms what TCM calls a ´pattern of disharmony´. The logic underlying TCM theory assumes that a part can only be understood in relation to the whole.

What diseases can TCM treat?

Who would benefit from TCM?

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has listed conditions for which TCM is considered appropriate. According to modern trials, Chinese herbal medicine has been found effective in the treatment of a wide range of health problems including gynaecological, paediatric, gastro-intestinal, dermatological and geriatric conditions.

Conditions that are considered suitable for treatment with Chinese herbs include:

  • Loss of appetite, constipation and common digestive disorders
  • Painful menstruation, pre-menstrual syndrome and morning sickness
  • Common cold, influenza and hay fever
  • Fatigue, chronic headache, insomnia, anxiety and stress skin disorders, fluid retention, allergies, over-responsive or decreased immunity
  • General pain, arthritis and rheumatism
  • Disorders of the nervous system

MASSAGE

Massage can be used as an adjunct to acupuncture, herbs and western medicine. One of its most powerful uses is in the treatment of stress and in the relief of musculoskeletal pain. Stress, in particular, is now understood to be the cause of a range of illnesses as it tends to depress the immune system and compromise other body functions.

In certain conditions where there may be a serious underlying pathology a qualified medical practitioner should first be consulted. In most cases herbs and / or acupuncture can be used in conjunction with modern Western medical treatment.

A broad range of health concerns can be addressed by Traditional Chinese Medicine, encompassing the very young to the very old, ranging from nervous system disorders to external trauma. In most cases it can be safely used with ‘conventional’ allopathic and naturopathic medicine.
